All you Need to Know About NPTEL is here

Hello there, if you stumbled upon what NPTEL is and want to know about what it actually is, this is the best place to read. Keep reading to know details about NPTEL and use the Table of Contents below to navigate.

    What is NPTEL?

NPTEL is a National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning, and it was established in early 2000s. NPTEL was planned and discussed by various IITs(Indian Institute of Technology), IIMs(Indian Institute of Management), CMU (Carnegie Mellon University) from 1999 to 2003. It is a joint initiative between the IITs and IISc Bangalore which for creating quality course content in various domains of Engineering and Sciences. In the initial years of its launch it provided course contents in only Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Computer Science and Information Technology, Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. These were the Courses which were across Engineering Colleges in India fro undergraduates, and the syllabus for the same was drafted by AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education) and other major Universities in India. Now as the years went through it was decided that NPTEL should move to various other domains and it did. NPTEL today provides web / video course contents in various domains of Engineering, Sciences and Humanities.

What is the need of NPTEL?

NPTEL was established because of the following reasons

    • India needed qualified manpower in the field of Engineering and technology but which was far less than the required number of Engineering Graduates which the Engineering and Technical Institutions could meet up to.

    • There were a lesser number of Engineering institutes and there, the teachers that were well qualified to teach were also lesser in number.

    • Majority of all the teachers joining were either young, inexperienced or just undergraduate degree holders.

    • To tackle all the above issues and to provide quality Engineering education, NPTEL was formed by joint efforts of IITs and IISc, Bangalore. It was more of the responsibility of the Premier Institutes of India towards Aspiring Indian Engineering Graduates.

    • India also needed (and still needs) quality teachers and professors, and the course material that NPTEL creates would also help as course training materials.

    • Many students across India could not attend the Premier Institutes like IITs, IIMs, IIsc, NITs, due to limited seats in those institutes. Thus, the course material is freely available on the NPTEL platform and anyone can Access it.

    • People who graduated from colleges want to enhance their skills, or learn any new skills required for their jobs and careers can do it on NPTEL for free that too created by the professors from the premier Indian Institutes.

    What is NPTEL Online Certification?

NPTEL currently provides web and video courses across 23 domains online for free. And with the increase in number of course domains there were an increased number of users or lets say learners. So, in 2014 the NPTEL Online Certification Program was started. To get a certificate a learner has to register for the course and also for the certification exam. Certifications were introduced by the NPTEL so as to give learners a producible result in the form of certificate.

The certification courses are carried out by the NPTEL two times in a year, January to June and July to December. Joining and learning from the course is free for everyone, but if a learner wishes to get a certificate he shall have to take up on a test. And after passing the test the learner shall be awarded with a certificate. Again, the courses can be freely accessed by any learner, but the learner has to pay fees for the exam in case the learner needs a certificate. It is NOT AT ALL  mandatory for a learner to sign up for the exam, certification exam needs a fee of approximately 1000 Indian Rupees (One Thousand Rupees Only).

Is there any Value of the NPTEL Online Certification?

Yes and No, both the answers are valid for this question. When you get knowledge from certain courses it is best to say yes, it has value. And the certification being given by the NPTEL, IITs, and MHRD India does carry a certain value. It may be used to show off in certain job interviews, and also many jobs do require certifications for certain positions. Yes the NPTEL Online Certification does have a value.

And No, if you just get enrolled in certain courses, earn no knowledge and still get certified by mugging up and writing answers, you could be caught up in the interview by the interviewer as the interviewer would certainly ask about the courses and its learning and would also test your concept and knowledge about your certification. In this case if you could confidently answer about it that's great, but what you actually need is knowledge.

Maharashtra's Universities and Colleges to Reopen soon: Uday Samant

Maharashtra's Universities and Colleges to Reopen soon: Uday Samant
Maharashtra's Higher and Technical Education Minister Uday Samant today announced on Facebook Live that the decision to commence colleges under state universities in the presence of 50 per cent students would be taken up after discussing it with Maharashtra's Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray by January 20, 2021. He interacted with students, principals, professors on his Facebook page to discuss faculty recruitment, college questions, barriers to admission process and other topics.

He said the decision to start colleges with 50 per cent attendance would be taken after reviewing the university and college hostels, local conditions. He clarified that the decision to fill other institutional vacancies and assistant professor posts in the university would be taken soon as per the approval given to the principal recruitment.

Samant said that all the admission deadlines to the courses of technical education have been extended till January 15. He said that the deadline for admission has been extended for another two days on Monday and Tuesday, as some technical glitches might exist and which includes connectivity issues. Also, it has been raining in some parts of Maharashtra, which might cause delay in the admission process.

He said that Yashwantrao Chavan Open University has decided to set up centers at district level, interstate and in border areas. Discussions and efforts are underway in this regard. A state-of-the-art data center has been set up at Gondwana University. He said the decision was taken to set up a model college in remote areas like Gadchiroli.

    Unipune SGPA and Percentage Calculator

    Unipune SGPA and Percentage Calculator

Unipune has started awarding SGPA and CGPA with the 2015 batch or say 2015 pattern for engineering. Many students having backlog have to struggle with calculating SGPA for filling Scholarship form, or any other competitive examination form, or for the data to be given to companies for placements.

Please note Percentage calculation is done by multiplying the total CGPA or SGPA by 8.80 (According to a notification by UNIPUNE) and can be checked in the link here.

In case of backlog, please do not include that subject in the calculator.

Please do not consider Audit course in the table for calculating as it does not have any Credit Points.

Here is the calculator which works with the formula given by UNIPUNE for calculating SGPA and Percentage.

    CRD (Credits)

Major Reforms in GATE 2021 and Eligibilty requirements.

Major Reforms in GATE 2021 and Eligibilty requirements.

Yes.It is official. Engineering students studying in their third year can now attempt the GATE exam. Which means GATE exam committee have relaxed the criteria for attempting the exam in the third year itself for the engineering students, starting from GATE 2021. Earlier there were students who thought and decided to attempt the exam and started studying accordingly. But they were being forced to wait for an extra year to attempt the exam. And as the GATE score is valid for about three years, students could take up the exam in third year itself and could use the rank obtained for admission after they finish their B.E or B.tech Degree.

Also, many students could take advantage of trying the attempt towards the exam in the third year to test their knowledge or to make changes into their study behavior and patterns . So that in their final year it could help them score more and improve their rank in the exam. As the NEP is introduced, there are a lot of exciting changes happening in the education system of India and this step by the GATE committee looks promising and could help students develop a better India.

Moreover students from the arts, science, commerce and architecture can also take up GATE exam.

More such reforms in the education system could develop a better research culture in India.

There are a bit changes in syllabus of some subjects. And most interestingly now one could attempt GATE exam in multiple subjects. Multiple here means a maximum of two subjects. Say, you are from Electronic And Communication branch and you find your interest in another subject of Instrumentation Engineering or say you need to have masters in physics, it is now possible to attempt GATE exam in any two subjects that you are interested in. Yes, you have to pay for both the subjects if you fill the application for two subjects, but you need not fill the separate application for the second subject you choose. But here's a catch. You could only choose the subject combination that is suggested by the GATE committee. Below you can find the combination of the subjects mentioned.

Along with these changes, there also has been addition of a new question type. Previously there were only MCQs (Multiple Choice Questions) and NATs (Numerical Answer Types), this year a new format, MSQ (Multiple Select Question) is being introduced. The pattern is same as MCQ, there will be questions of 1 mark and 2 marks, however there is no negative marking if the selected option is wrong. Also, no credit or mark even if the partial or single selected option is right or wrong. The mark for the question will only be credited if all the multiple selected options are right.
